Dangerous Birds It is not unheard of for small dogs to become attacked by big birds. If a hawk is very hungry and desperate it could attack a dog even if it is too big to be picked up and carried away. The Great Horned Owl is about 5 lbs and they can carry about 3 lbs. They will kill even larger game ( as much as 8-10 lb size) A great Horned Owl feeds on skunks and will attempt to store food for later so the size of there prey means little to them, it's a matter of being able to kill it or not. A Bald Eagle weighs about 15 lbs which can carry about 3/4 body weight up to10-12 lbs. We have spotted a Bald Eagle about 15 minutes from Raleigh in Wendell, NC. How to Protect Your Dog * Have a covered area for your dog to protect him from these dangerous birds. * If possible never leave your dog alone outside especially if you live in an area that has birds of prey. * Groups of dogs are less likely to be attacked by birds. |
